DC ANIMAL SHELTER

Available Positions:

Animal Care Manager (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)
The successful candidate would oversee all aspects of the animal care and handling at the D.C. Animal Shelter located at 1201 New York Avenue, NE, Washington, DC 20002.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages the kennel and cattery areas, supervising full- and part-time animal caretakers. Oversees hiring and training of all animal care staff. Instructs appropriate staff in euthanasia and the administration of animal vaccines and other drugs. Keep inventory and orders supplies pertaining to animal care. Makes sure canine heartworm and feline leukemia tests are run on all adopted animals. Works with other managers in the selection and spay/neuter of adoptable animals. Responsible for the care, handling, and if necessary, euthanasia of any animal housed at the shelter. Performs other duties as assigned by a supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
College degree in animal husbandry or related field. May substitute extensive experience in animal care and handling for college credits. Minimum 3 years experience working at an animal shelter, boarding kennel, or other facility where animals are housed. Must be able to work one or both weekend days and be available to answer staff questions on an "on call" basis. Will be required to successfully complete euthanasia certification and be certified as proficient in the administration of animal vaccines and medications.


Trainer/Evaluator (Full-time)
The successful candidate would be responsible for the temperament testing, training, and enrichment of shelter animals.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct morning check of all shelter animal behavior concerns. Document and report any behavior abnormalities of shelter dogs.Notify immediate supervisor upon any observation. Compose daily lists of dogs that are awaiting behavioral assessments, based on number of days dog has been at the shelter and the need for evaluation for foster/rescue placement. Perform behavioral assessments on all potentially adoptable dogs. Report findings of behavioral assessments through oral and written communication. Select potential program dogs with the input of adoption personnel. Assist Director with orientations and special WHS projects.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum 3 years experience working at an animal shelter, boarding kennel, or other facility where animals are housed. Must be able to work one or both weekend days and be available to answer staff questions on an "on call" basis. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Will be required to successfully complete euthanasia certification and be certified as proficient in the administration of animal vaccines and medications.


Animal Control Officer (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)
The successful candidate would respond to and resolve a wide-range of animal related complaints and calls for assistance using a variety of strategies. To successfully represent the Washington Humane Society and the DC Government in the safe, humane treatment of all animals.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responds to animal related calls for assistance within the District of Columbia; investigates reports of animal bites and follows up on quarantine requirements; rescues animals from dangerous situations; picks up sick, injured, trapped animals; assists other D.C. government agencies in the removal of animals during evictions, emergencies and police-related investigations; apprehends potentially dangerous animals running at large; picks up unwanted animals; enforces provisions of the D.C. Animal Control Act. Accurately and promptly completes all paperwork, including animal impoundment records, bite and investigation reports. Properly maintains District vehicles in a clean and orderly condition, including routinely checking condition of assigned vehicle. Performs other duties assigned by supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Excellent communication skills. Knowledge of and experience in handling domestic and wild animals. Must be able to obtain a D.C. Government driver's permit. Applicants must agree to criminal and pet cruelty background checks, and must pass such checks. Applicants must also have a clear current driving record at hiring and continue such record throughout employment. Will be required to successfully complete euthanasia training and certification within 6 months of employment.

Front Desk Assistant (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)
Assist the public in resolving a wide range of animal-related complaints and calls for assistance using a variety of strategies. General office duties include: answering telephones, completing reports, filing, and computer data entry; educating the public on the responsibility of companion animal ownership; explaining provisions of the D.C. Animal Control Act to the public; dispatching calls to Animal Control Officers in the field (who respond to calls for assistance or complaints); providing prompt, courteous service to people inquiring about shelter policies and programs; assisting in completion of adoption applications; receiving and processing animals surrendered at the shelter; preparing samples to be sent to the laboratory for rabies testing; and may include assisting in or actually performing animal euthanasia (with proper training). Front Desk Assistants report to the Front Desk Manager, and must successfully complete a basic training program.

Animal Caretaker (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)
Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing all animal runs, cages and furnishings; feeding, exercising, grooming and medicating animals; monitoring animals' health. Applicants must be willing and able to follow supervisor's directives closely and carefully. Other duties include assisting the public with meeting animals for adoption and cleaning common areas of the shelter. Other duties may be assigned by a supervisor. Minimum qualifications: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of, and experience in handling domestic and wild animals. A security clearance must be made available prior to confirmation of employment.

Spay/Neuter Veterinarian (Part-Time, Hourly)
Performs sterilization procedures on cats and dogs at the Capitol Area Spay & Neuter Center, in keeping with WHS' mission to reduce animal overpopulation and end the euthanasia of adoptable animals. Minimum Qualifications: a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the District of Columbia (or the ability to obtain one), extensive surgical experience, ability to operate in stressful environment, ability to lift 50 lbs. Security Clearance must be available prior to confirmation of employment. Commitment to WHS' mission to protect animals from cruelty and harm through the Good Home Guarantee and the reduction of unwanted animals through aggressive spaying and neutering.

Veterinary Assistant (Full-time, Non-Exempt)
Work in a collegial environment of support to the Medical Clinic Director and veterinarians in the performance of surgical preparation, anesthesia induction, monitoring, recovery, examination and medication of shelter and public animals. Direct clinic staff and volunteers in the duties associated with surgical preparation, clean up, recovery and medication.

Specific duties:
• Assist with duties required for surgery preparation
• Assist with intake and discharge of public and shelter animals into the Clinic
• Assist in maintaining all equipment in surgery to insure function and safety
• Assist with animal anesthetic recovery and follow-up care
• Assist with cleaning and packing surgical instruments
• Verify animal identification information prior to surgery
• Assist in screening animals for other medical conditions prior to surgery
• Perform surgery prep, clipping, tattooing and scrubbing as needed
• Run autoclave as needed
• Assist in administering appropriate tests, medical care and medication
• Assist with vaccinations and other appropriate injections as needed
• Assist with ordering and maintaining inventory of medical supplies
• All other duties as necessary

Contacts: Reports to Spay Neuter Program Manager. Works directly with Veterinary Technician, veterinarian, clinic staff, shelter staff, volunteers and general public.

Job conditions: Professional exposure risks include, but are not limited to: consistent handling of animals during the shift that may be fractious or incoherent from anesthesia. Environment is conducive to injury from needles, scalpels and bites. Moderate noise environment, lots of lifting (over 50 lbs) and bending. Use and possible exposure to irritating and/or toxic chemicals.

Minimum qualifications: One (1) year medical, veterinary or animal care experience. High school graduate or equivalent. Excellent oral communication skills (English). Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment with positive attitude and in agreement with WHS mission to end overpopulation of animals in the DC Metro area. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted regularly; lift 50+ lbs on occasion. Reliable transportation. Shelter experience a plus.


Veterinary Technician (Full-Time, Non-Exempt)
Work in a collegial environment of support to the Medical Director and veterinarians in the performance of surgical preparation, anesthesia induction, monitoring, recovery, examination and medication of shelter and public animals. Direct clinic staff and volunteers in the duties associated with surgical preparation, clean up, recovery and medication.

Specific Duties:
• Provide daily supervision, guidance and training to clinic assistance and recovery volunteers.
• Assist and supervise with the duties for surgery preparation
• Assist with intake and discharge of public and shelter animals into the Clinic
• Maintain all equipment in surgery to insure function and safety
• Oversee animal anesthetic recovery and follow-up care
• Clean and pack surgical instruments
• Verify animal identification prior to surgery
• Assist in screening animals for other medical conditions prior to surgery
• Perform surgery prep- clipping, tattooing, and scrubbing as needed
• Run autoclave as needed
• Examine animals brought in for health care issues pre and post- adoption. Work with veterinarians in administering appropriate tests, medical care and medication.
• Assist with vaccinations and other appropriate injections as needed
• Maintain surgery and controlled substances log books
• Perform or assign ordering and maintaining inventory of medical supplies
• All other duties as may be assigned
